Nedávno společností VMware vydaná „velká dvojka“ (VMware Workstation 6.5.0 a VMware Server 2.0) doplňuje „přehrávač“ VMware Player v aktualizované verzi 2.5.0.

Co od něj můžete čekat nového? Zejména přizpůsobení vzhledem k nové funkcionalitě u nových verzí VMware Server a Workstation, včetně podpory režimu Unity.

Společnost VMware, známý výrobce virtualizačního SW dnes vydala souběžně nové verze svých produktů. Virtualizaci pro desktopy VMware Workstation 6.5.0 a virtualizaci pro servery VMware Server 2.0.0.

Co je nového?

Nová verze se vyznačuje novým webovým rozhraním které výrazně rozšiřuje možnosti práce s VMware Server (v podstatě je již jako povinný „doplněk“). Rozšířila se podpora USB včetně USB 2.0 a především je podporována mnohem širší spektrum operačních systémů.

Přehled nových funkcí (anglicky)

• VI Web Access: VI Web Access enables you to perform host and virtual machine configuration on VMware Server 2.0. This intuitive web-based interface provides a simple and flexible tool for virtual machine management.
• VMware Remote Console: VMware Remote Console enables you to interact with the guest operating system on the host or a remote system. After you install it as a Web browser add-on, it can run independently from VI Web Access. VMware Remote Console also allows you to connect and disconnect client CD/DVD and floppy devices.
• USB 2.0 Device Support: VMware Server now supports faster data transfer with USB devices plugged into the host system. If the guest operating system has appropriate USB 2.0 device drivers, you can use peripherals that require high-speed performance, such as speakers, webcams, next-generation printers and scanners, and fast storage devices.

Po téměř půlročním vývoji a několika buildech (84113, 91182, 110068) jsme se dočkali finální verze VMware Workstation 6.5.0, build 118166.

Co je nového?

Kromě informací které si můžete přečíst v komentářích v předchozích buildech je zde krátké shrnutí:

• Enhanced VMware ACE authoring. Rozšířená funkcionalita distribučního systému pro virtuální stroje. Důležité především podnikové využití nasazení virtualizace skrz řešení VMware.
• Unity mode. Nová funkce, která umožní provozovat staré aplikace zdánlivě ve vašem současném operačním systému. Pokud zapnete tento režim u nějakého virtuálního stroje, aplikace se „vsune“ do vašeho systému a tváří se jako běžná aplikace. Můžete tak provozovat v Linuxu Windows aplikace (třeba Pinnacle Studio apod.).

Opět tu máme bez oznámení další build VMware Workstation 6.5. Připomínám jen že se stále jedná o beta verzi, takže kromě toho že je zdarma tak může obsahovat chyby (i když jich už je zatím docela minimum).

Co je nového?

Souhrn co je nového oproti předchozímu buildu opět neexistuje takže jen telegraficky co jsem vypozoroval:

• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 – plná (oficiální) podpora všech verzí Windows Server 2008 s nebo bez Hyper-V.
• Virtual machine streaming – You can now download a virtual machine from a Web server and power it on without waiting for the download to complete. Use the command-line startup command (vmware for Workstation or vmplayer for VMware Player) with the URL of the virtual machine. The download can also be paused and restarted. Note that this feature is not available for ACE instances.
• Networking performance using NAT — You will see significant improvements in networking performance if a virtual machine is configured to use NAT. Performance is ten times better than in the previous release in some cases.
• Folder sharing and dragging, dropping, copying, and pasting text and files — Transferring files between virtual machines or between host and guests using these features is up to 25 percent faster.
• USB devices — Several optimizations have reduced latency of I/O to USB devices by as much as 50 percent.
• I/O performance — A new asynchronous I/O manager boosts performance on Windows hosts under heavy I/O loads.
• VMCI performance — Applications that make use of VMCI will see a significant increase in throughput. Several optimizations have been added.
• New virtual hardware version — This new hardware version lets you use the following new features if the guest operating system supports them: Add or remove some virtual devices while the virtual machine is powered on („hot-plug“). Use LSI Logic SAS (serial attached SCSI) adapters in the virtual machine. Hot-add virtual CPUs and memory to guests that support this functionality. For virtual machines with this hardware version, 3-D graphics capabilities are enabled by default for Windows 2000 and later guest operating systems and most Linux guests.
